What it really costs to run — with today's UK electricity price

Buy the appliance, know the bill.

Every guide on PickWatt UK shows the running cost of each product at the current Ofgem electricity price (26.32p/kWh from 1 October 2026), so you can compare a heater, a coffee machine or a robot vacuum by what it actually adds to your bill — not just the sticker price.

Why running cost, not price

A 2 kW heater costs 52.6p an hour at today's cap. Run it four hours a night through December and it adds £63 to the bill — more than a cheap heater costs to buy. An electric blanket does the same job for one person at 3p an hour. A bean-to-cup machine uses under 1p of electricity per cup; it is the beans that cost. Plug-in solar, legal since August 2026, earns back about £110 a year. None of that is on the price tag, so we put it next to every product.

How the numbers are made

Every figure is rated power (or capacity) from the product's Amazon.co.uk listing × hours × the Ofgem unit rate in force this quarter. No efficiency fudge factors, no estimates where the seller publishes nothing — those products say 'not published'. The tariff and its source are shown at the top of each page, and we rebuild the whole site when Ofgem announces the next cap. Read more on the about page.
